Pop Geek Jonathan Coulton Succeeds by Giving Music Away

I've been a huge fan of Jonathan Coulton since I first heard "Code Monkey" http://scoopsmangum.blogspot.com/2007/07/code-monkey-video-by-jonathan-coulton.html

and his amazing acoustic cover of "Baby got Back" http://scoopsmangum.blogspot.com/2007/07/greatest-cover-song-ever.html by Sir Mix-a-Lot.

With artists like Radiohead and Trent Reznor letting their fans determine how much to pay for the artist's music, it's interesting that guys like Jonathan Coulton has been doing that for years. He made himself write a song a week and posted it on his blog for fans to listen to, critique and enjoy. Later, he moves the song to a pay site, but you can sample the entire song before you buy it. He said he did it, to force himself to continue to work at his craft and to be fan friendly. With his song "Code Monkey" as the theme song to the horrible animated show with the same name on G4 TV, and an original song for the XBox 360 release of "Orange Box" it seems like he has achieved both.

You can hear more of his music here.

You can read a short but interesting article at wired magazine:
