Special Effects Master Stan Winston has died

Stan Winston, the special effects and makeup artist who won Academy Awards for the Terminator series, Aliens, Jurassic Park, etc. has passed away at the age of 62 due to a long battle with multiple myeloma (a cancer of the plasma cells). I was lucky enough to attend a lecture he gave at the Sundance Film Festival a few years ago. He talked about how no matter how great the effect on screen looks, it shouldn't be there if it doesn't advance the story. He spoke about endless meetings with directors to make sure their vision was carried out to the best of his ability. He discussed how Aliens is really a film about motherhood, not Alien creatures. He was a visionary, a creative inspiration, and he will be missed.
